A widow from the company of the prophets was terrified her sons would be taken from her to pay her husband’s debt.
Elisha asks her what she has in her house. “Nothing, except a little oil,” she replies. Surely
we have all been in this situation; desperate for help, with nothing left to give but the tiny drops of hope and faith that, mixed with our meal, once long sustained us.
She is sent out to ask all her neighbors for empty jars.
‘DON’T
ASK FOR JUST A FEW’!
She is then sent inside with them to shut her door behind her and her sons. It is as though she has the empty hearts of everyone she knows stored up within her mind. There will be no distraction or disbelieving queries over
her pile of pots; she has SHUT THE DOOR to doubts. She is to pour out every drop of faith she has! Hearts will be filled, and will go out to be exchanged for returned blessing through the redeemed lives of her two young boys.
Would you attempt this
with the door open? I would struggle!
“You and your sons can live on what is left,” Elisha encourages them. What an amazing story!! As a child, I dreamed how it would feel to pour water into many bowls and watch them overflow if its source
would not end. I even tried this on our lounge floor when I was ten. We can experience that dream to its fullest! The joy and delight of a God who loves the miraculous is before us every day!!
Ask God – the God of endless source – and watch
how He will meet your own needs as you pour into others’ lives with the little oil you have.
Endless rivers.
Ever-flowing currents.
Eternal springs of life-giving oil.
Even a tiny ‘imagine if…’ God will
consider as hope, and will use it if we pour it into the lives around us. We know that when the Son says there is ‘not a jar left’ that it will be the only time the oil will stop flowing.
It is unbelievable really, isn’t it? Yet we
believe it because we see what filled vessels can do!!
Get to know the source! And grab those vessels!!
